About this tool

What is the Color Picker?

The Color Picker shows one color in five formats at once: HEX, RGB, CMYK, HSV and HSL. Choose a color visually, or type a value in any field and the others are converted instantly. The whole tool area is filled with the selected color, so you can judge it at a glance.

How to use

  1. Click anywhere in the colored area to open your browser's color picker, and choose a color.
  2. Or type a value into the HEX, RGB, CMYK, HSV or HSL field. The other fields update as soon as the value is valid; otherwise an error explains the expected format.
  3. Click the copy icon in a field to copy its value.
  4. Nearest color shows the closest named color. Click the ⋮ button next to it to see a list of named colors sorted by similarity.
  5. Turn on Show helper text to see the expected format under each field.

FAQ

Can I pick a color from my screen?

The tool opens your browser's own color picker. In some browsers, such as Chrome and Edge on desktop, it includes an eyedropper that can pick colors from the screen; in others it does not.

Is the CMYK value accurate for printing?

It is a simple mathematical conversion from RGB, without a color profile. Use it as a starting point, and check colors for print with your printer's profile.

What is the difference between HSV and HSL?

Both describe hue and saturation. In HSV, 100% value is the brightest version of the color; in HSL, 50% lightness is the pure color and 100% is always white.
