About this tool

What does the Image Converter do?

The Image Converter changes the file format of images. Add one or more images, pick an output format, and each file is re-encoded with the quality and size you choose. Conversion uses your browser's canvas, so the images never leave your device.

How to use

  1. Drop images onto the drop area, or click it to choose files. You can add several at once.
  2. Choose the Output format: PNG, JPEG, WebP (default) or AVIF.
  3. Adjust Quality, Scale and Max side (px) if needed. When the output is JPEG, pick a Background color for transparent areas.
  4. Each file shows its new name, pixel size, file size and the size compared with the original, for example (45%).
  5. Click the download icon next to a file, or Download all (N) as ZIP.

Changing any setting converts all files again automatically.

Features

  • Batch conversion of multiple files
  • Quality from 1 to 100% for JPEG, WebP and AVIF (default 90%). PNG is always lossless
  • Scale from 1% to 200%, plus an optional Max side that limits the longest side in pixels. The aspect ratio is always kept
  • Background color for JPEG, which cannot store transparency
  • Formats your browser cannot encode are marked "not supported in this browser" in the menu
  • ZIP download; files with the same name are numbered so none are overwritten
  • Your settings are remembered in this browser

FAQ

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Images are decoded and re-encoded in your browser, and the converted files are created on your device.

Is EXIF metadata kept?

No. The converted image does not include EXIF data such as the camera model, date taken or GPS location. This is useful for removing location data before sharing, but the camera information is lost as well.

What happens to transparency and animated images?

PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparency. JPEG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background color (white by default). Animated GIF and WebP files are converted using their first frame only.

Why is the converted file larger than the original?

Converting a JPEG photo to PNG usually makes it much larger, because PNG is lossless. Enlarging with Scale over 100% or using a high quality setting also increases the size. The percentage is shown in orange when the result is larger; try WebP or JPEG, or lower the quality.
