GIF Viewer

Play an animated GIF frame by frame: pause anywhere, step forward or back, seek with a slider, change the speed, and save any frame as a PNG image. Each frame's number, timestamp and delay are shown. GIFs are decoded in your browser and not uploaded.

About this tool

What is the GIF Viewer?

The GIF Viewer lets you inspect animated GIF files in detail. A normal image viewer only plays the animation, but here you can stop at any frame, step forward and backward one frame at a time, jump anywhere with a seek bar, and see how long each frame is shown.

How to use

  1. Drop a GIF file onto the drop area, or click it to choose one. Playback starts automatically when the GIF has more than one frame.
  2. Click the image, press Space, or use the play button to pause and resume.
  3. Use the buttons for the first frame, previous frame, next frame and last frame, or drag the slider to jump to a frame.
  4. Change the Speed, the Zoom and whether to Loop.
  5. Click Save frame as PNG to download the frame you are looking at, for example name-frame012.png.

Features

  • Pause at any frame and step one frame at a time

  • Zoom: fit to the window, or 1x, 2x and 4x with sharp (pixelated) scaling
  • Loop on or off; with loop off, playback stops at the last frame
  • Frame number, timestamp, delay and image size of the current frame
  • Checkerboard background that makes transparent areas visible
  • Save the current frame at its original size as PNG

Keyboard shortcuts

Click the image first, then use:

KeyAction
SpacePlay / Pause
← / →Previous / Next frame
Home / EndFirst / Last frame

How frames are displayed

Each frame is composited the same way browsers do, taking the GIF disposal method and transparency into account. A saved frame therefore looks exactly like what you see during playback, not like the raw partial image stored in the file.

FAQ

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. The file is decoded in your browser. It is also kept in this browser, so it is still there the next time you open the tool.

Why do some frames show a delay of 100ms when the file says 0?

Browsers treat frame delays of 10ms or less as 100ms, and this viewer does the same so playback matches what you see in a browser.

Can I export all frames at once?

No. Save frame as PNG saves the current frame only; step through the frames to save the ones you need.

Is there a size limit?

All frames are decoded into memory before playback. GIFs whose decoded frames would exceed about 1 GB (width × height × 4 bytes × number of frames) are rejected.
