About this tool

What is this Markdown editor?

Markdown is a plain-text format for writing formatted documents: # Heading, **bold**, - list item and so on. It is used for README files, documentation, wikis, notes and blog posts. This editor shows your Markdown source on the left and the rendered result on the right as you type, so you can check formatting without committing or publishing anything.

How to use

  1. Start typing in the editor, or drag and drop a .md file onto it to open it.
  2. Use the toolbar to insert formatting (bold, headings, lists, links, tables, code blocks and more), or type the Markdown yourself.
  3. Watch the preview update on the right. Use the toolbar to switch to preview only, show the generated HTML, or open a table of contents.
  4. Click the save button in the toolbar or press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac) to download the document. It keeps the name of the file you dropped, or is saved as document.md.

FAQ

Is my document uploaded?

No. Your text is edited and rendered in your browser and is never sent to a server. Note that code highlighting, Mermaid, KaTeX and Prettier load their JavaScript libraries from a public CDN (unpkg.com) the first time they are needed, so those features require an internet connection.

Does it support GitHub Flavored Markdown?

Yes, the common GFM extensions work: tables, task lists, strikethrough and fenced code blocks.

Can I export to PDF or HTML?

The editor saves Markdown (.md). You can see the generated HTML with the HTML preview button in the toolbar. For PDF, use the Markdown to PDF tool.
