About this tool

What does the Hiragana / Katakana Converter do?

Japanese uses two kana scripts that represent the same sounds: hiragana (ひらがな) for native words and grammar, and katakana (カタカナ) mostly for loanwords, names and emphasis. This tool swaps one script for the other character by character, for example ひらがな ↔ ヒラガナ. It is useful for preparing readings (furigana) in either script, normalizing data such as name readings, and practicing kana.

How to use

  1. Enter text in Hiragana (left), or drop a text file onto it.
  2. Click To Katakana to write the katakana version to Katakana (right).
  3. To go the other way, enter text in Katakana and click To Hiragana.
  4. Copy or download the result with the buttons in the corner of each editor.

Mixed text is fine: only the kana of the source script are converted, and everything else is kept as it is.

FAQ

Can it convert kanji to hiragana or katakana?

No. Reading kanji requires a dictionary; this tool converts only between the two kana scripts. Kanji remain as they are.

Is half-width katakana (カタカナ) supported?

Half-width katakana is not converted. Convert it to full-width first with the Unicode Normalization tool (NFKC), then convert it here.

Why do ヷ, ヸ, ヹ and ヺ stay as katakana?

These characters have no hiragana equivalent in Unicode, so they are left unchanged when converting to hiragana.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Conversion happens in your browser.
