About this tool

What does the QR Code / Barcode Reader do?

This tool decodes QR codes and barcodes and shows their content as text. Point your device's camera at a code, or open a screenshot or photo that contains one. It is handy on a computer, where there is no built-in scanner, and for checking where a QR code leads before you open it.

How to use

Scan with the camera

  1. Select Camera mode and click Find cameras. Allow camera access when the browser asks.
  2. Click Start with the name of the camera you want to use.
  3. Hold the code inside the scan box. The result appears in Decoded text and the field flashes when a new code is read.
  4. Click Stop camera when you are done.

Read from an image

  1. Switch to File mode.
  2. Drop an image onto the drop area, or click it to choose a file. The result appears in Decoded text.

Click the copy icon to copy the result. If the result is an http or https URL, the arrow icon opens it in a new tab.

FAQ

Is the camera video or my image sent to a server?

No. Codes are decoded in your browser, and the camera video and images stay on your device.

Why doesn't the camera start?

Make sure camera access is allowed for this site in your browser settings and that no other app is using the camera. Camera access also requires a secure (HTTPS) connection. If it still fails, take a photo of the code and use File mode.

Why is nothing found in my image?

Use a sharp image in which the code is large enough and has a quiet margin around it. If an image contains several codes, only one result is shown, so crop the image to the code you want.

Is it safe to open a scanned link?

Check the decoded URL before opening it. QR codes can point to phishing sites, which is why this tool shows the text first instead of opening it automatically.
